Isotretinoin is a retinoid, like retinol. Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A. They can help treat many skin conditions like acne. The medication works by shrinking the sebaceous glands, which secrete an oily substance called sebum. Sebum can contribute to acne.

It generally takes 4 to 5 months for isotretinoin treatment to work, but you may take the medication for a shorter or longer period. The length of time you take it depends on how your skin responds to treatment and if you have any side effects. Research shows about half of people who take isotretinoin for acne see their skin clear up and stay clear, although acne can seem to get a bit worse with the first week to 14 days of treatment. Other people see some improvement or may see improvement but the acne returns. In this case, treatment can be repeated for another 4 to 6 months.
